Elective coursework in the MPP program should be used to develop an area of policy expertise. In order to develop an area of policy expertise, students are to direct their required 18 elective units toward a specific policy specialization. Students may develop policy expertise by choosing courses from a wide array of disciplines throughout the university.

Elective units may be chosen from 400 or 500 level courses offered by academic departments as appropriate. It is important to check with the instructor of the elective course to determine the current applicability the course has with the MPP degree. Only twelve of the eighteen required elective units in the program may be at the 400 level. For a description of each course check out the Cal Poly website's online 2007-2009 catalog.
